DOSE-TIME SCALE

DRUG USE EDUCATION: Drug Administration

Forms of Drug Administration:

  • Drug Use
  • Drug Abuse
  • Chemical Dependency
  • Anti-Drug Disorder (ADD2)

There are 4 quantitative forms of administering drugs.  Each of these can be mathematically defined and graphed in the first quadrant of an x,y graph.

Drug Use is characterized by an arbitrary single standard maximum dose of any drug presuming that the quality of the drug itself meets pharmaceutical quality specifications. Illicit drugs generally fall lower than this standard requiring the dosage to be increased in amount.  Once the standard maximum does is quantified correctly, drug use can be described as x </= 1 dose; y =1.  For every period in time, the dose (x) is always no greater than 1.  For example, two aspirin tablets is the standard maximum dose.  One half of this amount or one tablet is 1/2 (standard maximum dose).

Graph 1.0: The distinctions between Use, Abuse, Dependency, and Disorder are defined.

Drug Abuse is characterized by an excess of the standard maximum dose.   In this case x>1; y=1.  For example, 4 aspirin describes 2 times or double the standard maximum dose. It should be noted that "sugar" is the most abused psycho-stimulant in the world.  One cube of sugar is the smd for a cup of coffee.  Increasing this is abuse.  A slice of an apple pie is typically 4 or 5 times the amount required.  The worst part of ADD2 is that it is promoted as the ideal approach for society.  It is considered and made to be the norm.  As a result, those who exhibit this behavior often retaliate against drug users.  The typical drug user is just trying to medicate.

In the long-term, the person with ADD2 is bound to use or abuse drugs themselves.  In fact, there are cases when someone with ADD2 will be hostile to a users.  When the users leaves, the person with ADD2 will administer the drug.

Chemical Dependency generally begins as a result of repeated abuse, although it can develop when a drug is used for a long period of time when the use is continuous.  Dependency differs from addiction which is the simply a pattern of behavior.  In dependency, there are typically physiological changes that have occurred.  These changes are only permanent if the drug has been administered enough times to cause restructuring of the brain.  If so, to relieve this condition, the drug must constantly be administered to achieve normal functioning.  As for dosage levels when dependency begins, Graph 2, identifies that for a certain hypothetical drug, taking 5 times the standard maximum does the 4th time, or a total of 20 standard maximum doses, constitutes dependency.  At some point, any number of doses beyond this will require a

minimal number of times.  This is not accurate because, at some point, illness and death will result.  Thus, Graph 3 is more likely to be the scenario.  Does this mean that any thing within the purple region here is acceptable? The answer to that is absolutely not!  Drug abuse does not make a great "high".  It does not give any feeling of pleasure to use beyond the standard maximum dose.  As you can see in each of the graphs, ADD2 is normally a 0-dose or non-user for y amount of time.  When that period is over, the person with ADD2 is free to use the drug.  For the US Government, the delay required is permanent.  The US Government has no intention of allowing citizens to use drugs during the next 20 years.  Those with ADD2 in the US Government think that by that time -- or sooner -- illicit drugs will no longer be around.
Every time that a drug is abused, there are changes that take place which require additional doses to achieve the same effect.  The reason why drugs MUST be legalized is that drugs made in clandestine labs are never consistent.  Dependency can never be accurately measured.  Use and abuse can never be distinguished and that's exactly what the US Government promotes as punishment to those who use or abuse illicit drugs.  Unfortunately, since the US and other Governments prohibit illicit drug use, they cannot be held responsible.  What governments are responsible for is not providing a legally available substance to patients with disorders requiring them.

Graph 3.0: Beyond some point, abuse results in illness and even death.

For this reason it is always recommended that the user goes to a reliable physician.  During recent years, testing patients for sleep disorders has resulted in the physician making an incorrect diagnosis to avoid having to prescribe a controlled substance. Some patients will respond to the inappropriate treatment; most do not.  We know today that in order for illicit drugs to be unavailable in 20 years, their pharmaceutical equivalents must be obtainable.  Because there are so many government officials with ADD2, it has become very impossible to know what will hapen in the world of pharmacology.  We do know that the drugs that are being used today in clinics are not always effective.
Anti-Drug Disorder is characterized by a delay of some time (y).  This delay can be a few minutes, a few hours, days, weeks, months, years, decades, or never cease.  What happens in ADD2 is that a would be user of a drug is usually so fearful that they avoid using the drug.  ADD2 is not to be confused with a Drug-Free Attitude (DFA), that is someone who chooses not to use drugs or doesn't need to use them, but doesn't have a problem with those who do.

In ADD2, a person is critical about drug users and drug abusers, often thinking that this is necessary because drugs can kill, drugs can tear families apart, drugs can cause the rivers and oceans to turn to blood... and other irrational fears.   Drugs that are used properly will not result in damage to the body unless there is something already wrong which should have been detected beforehand.  However, healthcare in the US is feeble when it comes to pre-drug testing.  This is also a sign of ADD2.

Conclusion:  Drug Use is normal human behavior.  People use drugs every day for various reasons.  A drug does not have to be required or prescribed by ta physician to be used.  If the drug has benefits to the user and is within the standard maximum dose, then it is, by all means normal.  When sports figures or athletes use drugs properly, they should not be penalized.  What they are doing is using drugs that are available and normal behavior.

Abuse is excessive. It can be harmful if not deadly and even when it is not deadly or harmful, it does not have a desirable effect. Repeatedly abusing a drugs leads one to become dependent upon the drug.  This has further implications that are beyond the scope of this web page.

Anti-Drug Disorder does not means someone will never user the drug, it means that they have delayed in using it.
